Poolhouse 1, Home Counties, UK

Client: Private

Date: 2001

An indoor swimming pool and leisure wing of a Grade 2 listed luxury residence in southern England. The design was carefully crafted employing local materials, most notably a thatched roof so that it would sit comfortably into the surrounding countryside. The planted roof was inspired by academic research into worldwide thatching techniques, adapting an ancient Japanese planted method.

Poolhouse 1 was awarded RIBA Award for Architecture in 2001 and mid-listed for the Stirling Prize.
