Soft and Hairy House, Tokyo, Japan
Date: 1992 - 1994
Located on a green field site, the design was guided by the clients’ interest in Salvador Dali. They were particularly inspired by his statement that future architecture would be ‘soft and hairy’. As a result, the building harbours the unexpected – where the architecture moves between dream and reality.
From the outside the building walls seem as if they been pulled directly from the ground with its rough render – the force of this has been so great it has kept the topsoil, allowing the parapet to be hidden under a shaggy fringe of local grass and flora. It is a continuous landscape of inside and out.
